What kind of scaffolding do you need?

A hanging scaffold, also called a suspended scaffold or swing stage, hangs from the top of a building instead of standing on the ground. Platforms drop from outriggers or a parapet on wire rope, and crews work down the face of the structure. It is how high-rise facades get painted, sealed, cleaned, and repaired when a ground-up scaffold would be impractical or block everything below.

How suspension works

Support beams or outriggers anchor at the roof and reach past the edge. Wire ropes run from those beams down to a platform, and hoists raise and lower the stage as the work moves down the wall. Because the whole system loads the roof structure, it has to be rigged and counterweighted correctly, and every worker ties off to an independent lifeline, separate from the platform ropes. This is engineered, inspected work, not a quick set-and-go.

Where hanging scaffolds fit

Suspended platforms handle window washing and glazing, facade painting and sealing, waterproofing, concrete repair, and inspection on mid- and high-rise buildings. They keep the sidewalk and lower floors clear, which matters on a busy commercial block. For lower buildings, or where the ground is open, a ground-supported stationary scaffold is usually simpler and cheaper.

Safety and rigging

Suspended access carries real fall risk, so we plan it carefully. Counterweights or tiebacks secure every outrigger, ropes and hoists are rated for the load, and each worker rides on a separate fall-arrest line. We inspect the rigging before every shift. Roof-edge work above often pairs with temporary railing to protect the crew setting up the outriggers.

Hanging Scaffold, FAQs

What is a hanging scaffold?

It is a platform suspended from the top of a building on wire ropes, also called a suspended scaffold or swing stage. Crews work down the face of the structure for facade, window, and waterproofing jobs.

How is a suspended scaffold different from a regular scaffold?

A regular scaffold stands on the ground and builds up. A hanging scaffold loads the roof and works down. It keeps the sidewalk and lower floors clear, which suits busy high-rise sites.

Are hanging scaffolds safe?

When rigged and inspected correctly, yes. Every outrigger is counterweighted or tied back, ropes and hoists are load-rated, and each worker uses a separate fall-arrest lifeline. We inspect the system before every shift.

What jobs use hanging scaffolds?

Window washing and glazing, facade painting and sealing, waterproofing, concrete repair, and inspection on mid- and high-rise buildings.
